2014 Winter Workshop: Hitting the Target – Geosteering in Complex Environments from the Geology and Engineering Perspective
REGISTER NOW
(12 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION)
Most operators would agree that, while drilling horizontally, hitting your target and staying there is a key element to the overall production of the well. For the well site geologist, using geological markers to help visualize and pinpoint just the right spot in the reservoir and stay in that spot for sometimes thousands of feet can be a daunting task. Additionally the drilling engineer must weigh the goals of his team, keep costs down and still drill a successful well. At times these two different perspectives can come into conflict. Join us this December as we explore well placement from a geological and engineering perspective and discuss how these two entities can come together for the overall success of the job.

9:00 Essentials of Geosteering
Tom Arnold – Director of Training, Paladin Surface Logging, LLC
10:30 Geosteering: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Tom Arnold – Director of Training, Paladin Surface Logging, LLC
Graduating from the University of Texas Pan American in 1973 with degrees in Geology and Astrophysics, Tom Arnold’s career has always been about innovation and education. He is the Director of Training for Paladin Geological Services and GeoGap Training Center, providing instruction in geosteering, geology, mud logging, formation evaluation and more. With over thirty years of industry experience, he is the PetroSkills world wide Geosteering trainer / course developer and the SES Geosteering Software Third Party trainer. He has many years of experience geosteering and written his own software for process.
Noon Lunch (included)
1:00 Drag Reduction During the Directional Drilling Process
Daniel Wright – Slider – Schlumberger
Daniel Wright has 10 years directional drilling automation experience. With the drilling industry now turning towards varieties in automation, Daniel has implemented directional drilling automation technology in all major Oil & Gas plays in the United States and internationally. The Slider group at Schlumberger has also become a leading educational resource for understanding torque and drag in the directional drilling system, and provides training for engineers and directional drillers on the wellbore physics behind the directional drilling process. Drag reduction and automated directional manipulation now take the conventional mud-motor assembly to new levels, making it cost effective for operators to drill their wells more efficiently with this system.
